The pace of growth has been even more spectacular in Brussels.
Over the past decade, the capital city has swelled by another 150,000 inhabitants, a growth rate of 18%.
Another 100,000 newcomers are expected to move to Brussels by 2020, bringing the population to a total of 1.25 million.
